A new icon rises in Trondheim. Villa Nord, a new boutique hotel on a storied address, is joining the Nordic Hotels & Resorts family. Set to open in September 2026, this new landmark in the making will offer an experience of modern luxury, intimacy and tailored service in historic surroundings.
Trondheim is a city on an undeniable ascent. Despite its relatively small scale—it has just over 200,000 inhabitants—Norway’s third biggest city packs a punch. Its characteristic fusion of history, art and technology has long ignited a culture of innovation and rich tradition. Now, this popular destination is getting a new landmark hotel: Villa Nord.
Villa Nord will open its doors on Dronningens gate, right in the heart of Trondheim. With its building currently undergoing an extensive renovation, the hotel is set to open in September 2026. Its 51 rooms, restaurant, bar, café and gym will make up an exclusive boutique concept that combines historical heritage with modern comfort.
Villa Nord will be part of Nordic Hotels & Resorts, Strawberry’s collection of unique and independent hotels in the Nordic region. It is joining a family of some of Northern Europe’s finest grande dames and most exciting newcomers, including names like Hotel Kämp in Finland, Sommerro in Norway, Villa Copenhagen in Denmark, and At Six in Sweden.
Intimate Size, Grand Ambitions
Villa Nord builds on a history that stretches back to 1837. This was when trader Arnt Flengstad opened Trondheim’s first hotel, Hôtel du Nord, on Fjordgata. After the hotel had to give way to competition, Flengstad and his wife Ingeborg moved to Dronningens gate 26 in 1839, where they continued to welcome travelers. Now, their legacy is reborn in a new guise when Villa Nord opens its doors—on the same, original address on Dronningens gate where Hôtel du Nord once stood.
With its intimate size and clear focus on quality, Villa Nord will become the new meeting place in Trondheim. The hotel will house 51 rooms, including suites with private roof terraces, as well as a restaurant, bar and café on the ground floor. In addition, guests will have access to a modern gym in the basement and elegant meeting room facilities. The goal: to set a new standard for contemporary luxury.
A Progressive City With a Small Town Heart
Villa Nord will add to the allure of a city already celebrated for its compelling blend of history, art, and innovation. The picturesque Trondheim sits in central Norway, right on the stunning Trondheim Fjord. With both a traditional and modern air, it is known for its friendly locals, Viking history, and young, creative vibe. The city is home to national treasure Nidaros Cathedral, while the state-of-the-art museum PoMo is one of several experiences that has put the area on the cultural map.
Having acted as the Viking capital of Norway many centuries ago, the Trondheim of today has established itself as the country’s technology capital with a booming tech community and start-up scene. This is due in large part to being home to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the largest university in Norway.
Beyond tech, Trondheim is also a gastronomic powerhouse. A worthwhile pilgrimage for the traveler with an appetite, it was recently awarded European Region of Gastronomy 2022. With a wide selection of local coffee shops, charming cafés, delectable eateries, and microbreweries, no visitor runs out of options here. Small and big game, lamb, shellfish, salmon, berries and vegetables are all specialties from the Trondheim region.
