On Thursday, 11 September, Melbourne will welcome the opening of Hotel Indigo Melbourne Little Collins. Part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ first dual-branded property in Australia – developed over eight years alongside the new Holiday Inn Melbourne Bourke Street Mall – the 179-room boutique hotel introduces a vibrant new energy to the heart of the CBD. The design-led lifestyle property transforms one of Melbourne’s most storied corners into a vibrant neighbourhood hub, inviting guests to ‘find their curious’ in Melbourne’s heart.

The opening of Hotel Indigo Melbourne Little Collins marks another milestone in the brand’s Australian story. Part of a global collection of more than 150 neighbourhood-inspired hotels, each Hotel Indigo property is as unique as its surrounding locale. At Hotel Indigo Melbourne Little Collins the city’s layered history takes centre stage, the property rises behind four preserved heritage façades – Diamond House, the Public Benefit Bootery, Allan’s, and the York Building – the story of former jewellers and bootmakers weave Melbourne’s cultural heritage into every guest experience.

Storytelling by Design

Developed by Steadfast Capital, Hotel Indigo Melbourne Little Collins has been brought to life through the vision of acclaimed global design studio Buchan and the proven expertise of construction firm, Hickory. Standout features include terrace balcony rooms, suites, dynamic interconnected spaces, an internal courtyard and eclectic dining destinations.

Conveniently located in the heart of Melbourne’s vibrant arts, theatre and dining precincts, Hotel Indigo Melbourne Little Collins is on the doorstep of the city’s key business and shopping districts and has easy access to public transport. Just a short tram ride from popular tourist attractions such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Melbourne International Airport is 21 kilometres from the hotel.

Design-Led Public Spaces

Stepping off the hustle and bustle of Little Collins Street, guests are welcomed by Hotel Indigo’s friendly concierge team, who greet visitors and guide them to the Level 2 reception with a state of the art check in service. Guests arrive surrounded by the property’s signature Mondrian blue, a nod to Melbourne’s blue street signs. The intimate lobby areas offer places for guests to meet, connect, and unwind, surrounded by bold interiors that blend heritage charm with contemporary design. Here, guests are immersed in Melbourne’s quirky history – monkey motifs throughout reference E.W. Cole, the eccentric owner of Cole’s Book Arcade, whose monkey-filled menagerie was once located within the precinct.

A soaring spiral staircase inspired by Sidney Myer’s drapery store connects the dining space to level five, setting the tone for a hotel experience that is as architectural as it is artistic. A circular bar sits around the bottom of the stairs, offering the perfect vantage point to admire the dramatic cathedral-like atrium space and three-storey ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ artwork by acclaimed Adelaide-born, Melbourne-based muralist and figurative painter Lisa King. Commissioned exclusively for the hotel, it features symbolic objects – a sneaker and tennis ball for the Australian Open, fruit and flowers for the Queen Victoria Market and neon lights highlighting Melbourne CBD’s streets and laneways.

Rooms With A Story To Tell

Further nods to the building’s past continue through the hotel’s corridors – room numbers are designed like coins engraved with an E.W Cole quote, “The world is a book. Those who do not travel read only one page.” Guest rooms are stylish and comfortable, featuring modern amenities from free Wi-Fi to Chromecast-enabled TVs. Guests can choose from standard rooms, premium rooms and suites with views of laneways, internal courtyards and city views, including the iconic Bourke Street Mall. Each room is fitted with a mini bar, featuring libations from local Little Lon Gin Distillery, coffee pod machines and Biology amenities.

On the walls are graphic maps of the city’s laneways with a small light marking the location of the hotel. In-room artwork also gives a nod to the city’s landmarks, with images of ballerinas and The Capitol on the wall, a tribute to Melbourne’s vibrant cultural scene.

Design touches layer history with play: terrazzo side tables, made from recycled Skyy Vodka bottles, nod to sustainability, brass accents, and jewel-like bathroom stools reference the site’s past as a jeweller. And for those wanting a truly rockstar experience, the property’s five balcony rooms and one premium balcony room with 28m² outdoor spaces overlooking Little Collins Street, offer all that and more in the heart of Melbourne.
