In case this is our 1st time: I’m Fabian Bartnick aka Fabi – The Commercial Growth Leader. I help companies bridge data, marketing, sales, revenue management and communication to drive future-proof revenue. Each week, I share real stories and strategies you can use to grow faster and work smarter.

You know those family trips that sound like a good idea?

“Let’s move countries, stop over in London, and bring only the essentials!” Which, of course, turned into 8 suitcases, 4 bag packs, loads of plastic bag 🙂

Arriving in London: Haydo took it upon himself to help. “I get the luggage” He was so proud. I let him own it.

🧳 Responsibility Taken. Accountability… Not So Much.

We take the bus for 10min to the car rental area. 20min pass and that’s when Rafa turns to me and says: “Wait… there is only 7 suitcases”

Cue everyone’s face freezing like a Windows XP error. At this point, we’d passed baggage claim, walked across the terminal, AND total time passed: 30 minutes.

So I did what every parent/leader does at some point…I took the bus back to the terminal, cleared escorted security and went to the belt, and—miracle of miracles—the bag was still circling like it had abandonment issues.

Revenue Management, Anyone?

This story is every revenue meeting ever.

  • Everyone has their part.
  • Everyone feels responsible.
  • But who is accountable when something falls through?

Just like Haydo thought he “had it,” every department thinks they’ve done their bit:

  • Marketing: “We ran the campaign.”
  • Sales: “We filled the group block.”
  • Rev: “We forecasted accurately.”
  • Ops: “We just followed instructions.”

But when the bag is missing—or bookings dip, or pickup stalls—someone has to get back on the bus, trace the steps, and fix it.

That’s accountability.

Responsibility is Shared. Accountability is Owned.

Responsibility says, “I did my part.” Accountability says, “If it fails, it’s still my problem.”

The difference? One makes you look good. The other makes the whole team win.

In our case? We got the bag. Car still wasn’t ready. And I got an hour less of sleep. But no one will forget this trip—or this lesson.

Own the outcome, not just your task.

Love, Fabi
